Artists from South Florida and elsewhere plan to come together in a Tribute to James Roos, at 6:30 p.m. March 14 in the University of Miami's Gusman Concert Hall.
The heart of the tribute honoring this newspaper's longtime classical music critic will be a concert featuring a parade of distinguished international artists, presented by the University of Miami's School of Music, The Herald and El Nuevo Herald in association with the Concert Association of Florida, the Florida Grand Opera, the Chamber Music of Miami, Miami City Ballet, the New World Symphony, and Sunday Afternoons of Music.
Martin Bookspan, the popular host of PBS' Live from Lincoln Center, will be master of ceremonies.
Among the artists scheduled to appear are the Amernet String Quartet, the Jerusalem Quartet, and a quartet of New World Symphony Fellows.
Soprano Helen Donath will sing, alongside performances by bassist Janet Clippard, cellist William de Rosa, clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein, pianists Carlo Grante, Paul Pasnak, Michele Levin and Bruno Leonardo Gelber, trumpeter Jeffrey Kaye, violinist Peter Zazofsky and basso Eric Owens.
During his 31 years as The Herald's music critic, Roos was a driving force in the development of the cultural life of South Florida. Roos, who is recovering from brain surgery, will be joined by his family, colleagues and friends.
Proceeds from the concert will go to the James Roos Scholarship Fund at the University of Miami's Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music.
