2012 Stamps Distinguished Visitor Craig Carothers presents a free lecture entitled “Of the Journey and the Songs: Musings of a Modern American Songwriter”. Carothers is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter originally from Portland, Oregon. Carothers’ songs have been recorded by such artists as Kathy Mattea, Lorrie Morgan, Andrea Zonn, and Steve Seskin. Carothers also wrote several songs for the 2005 movie The Californians.

Enjoy a free meet-the-composer session with 2012 Stamps Distinguished Visitor Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Gain behind-the-scenes insight into the world of a consummate professional composer whose distinct music continues to impact audiences in profound ways. Zwilich is a Pulitzer Prize-winning and multi-Grammy- nominated composer. Her music is widely performed and recorded by leading orchestras and chamber ensembles. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Florida State University and a doctorate from the Julliard School of Music. Her distinct music is known for its technical substance and appeal to mixed audiences.

Following her talk, UM students will be performing three pieces:
-“Clarino” - Quartet for Four Clarinets (1977)
-“Episodes” - for Soprano Sax and Piano (2007)
-Quintet for Saxophone and String Quartet (2007)

Joy and Passion - Frost Symphony Orchestra

The joyous and passionate music of composers Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Dmitri Shostakovich are paired in a challenging concert showcasing the artistic depth of the Frost Symphony Orchestra. The concert opens with Jubilation by Zwilich, a 1983 Pulitzer Prize winner and 2012 Stamps Distinguished Visitor, and the Zwilich Bassoon Concerto featuring faculty artist Luciano Magnanini as bassoon soloist. Then, the Shostakovitch Symphony No. 5, described after its premiere as “…deep, meaningful, gripping music, classical in the integrity of its conception, perfect in form and the mastery of orchestral writing—music striking for its novelty and originality, but at the same time somehow hauntingly familiar, so truly and sincerely does it recount human feelings” (Neuhaus).

Joseph Silverstein Master Class
Exploring the Music of J.S. Bach

2012 Stamps Distinguished Visitor Joseph Silverstein will present a highly engaging lecture that illuminates the performance practices of the Baroque era as well as the brilliance of one of the world’s most beloved composers, Johann Sebastian Bach.

Joseph Silverstein was concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1962 to 1984. A renowned violinist and conductor, Silverstein served as Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1971 and music director from 1983 to 1998 of the Utah Symphony, which named him conductor laureate in the 1998-1999 season. He also served as Principal Guest Conductor of Seattle’s Northwest Chamber Orchestra and has been Artistic Advisor for several orchestras including Hartford, Kansas City, Baltimore, Toledo, Winnipeg, Oakland, and Louisville. Through his talented musical works, Silverstein is the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and has been on the faculties of schools like Boston University, Yale University, and the Tanglewood Music Center.
